Product description

Norwegian king crab - exquisite treat

The king crab, often referred to as the monster crab, comes from the ice-cold and deep waters of Norway. It is considered a sustainable choice for seafood, as it could spread invasively without human intervention and threaten the ecological balance. The stock can be controlled by targeted extraction under strict fishing quotas.

In high-end gastronomy, the king crab is highly prized for its unique flavor profile. Its pale flesh and intense, sweetish-nutty taste are reminiscent of the rough seas of Norway. Through optimal catching and freezing methods, the unique aroma of the large crustaceans is perfectly preserved and brings a portion of luxury to your plate.

The preparation of raw king crabs

HONEST CATCH has made a conscious decision not to offer live king crabs, as their live shipping is neither species-appropriate nor up-to-date and a fluctuating meat quality in stressed animals does not meet our quality standards. Rather, we rely on the most modern processing and freezing methods to ensure unparalleled quality and practical handling.

The raw king crab legs and claws offer maximum flexibility in preparation as they can be boiled, fried, grilled or steamed according to your preference.  If you are still unsure about the preparation, you will find lots of tips and tricks on how to process the delicacy in our How to King crab. A particularly quick and easy preparation is given with the pre-cooked king crab legs, which are already cooked and halved.

Origin

The king crab, with the Latin term Paralithodes camtschaticus, is caught in the Barents Sea (FAO 27. 1) with traps and traps. In the 1960s, it was introduced there specifically to improve the regional food supply. Due to the lack of natural enemies in its new habitat, it spread rapidly and began to displace the native sea creatures. In response, measures have been taken, including the establishment of controlled catch quotas, to control the growth of the population.

Despite these challenges, the king crab is considered a particularly sustainable choice. Their catch is strictly monitored and regulated to maintain ecological balance and minimize impact on the environment. The fleet consists of small fishing boats that travel only short distances between the fishing area and the port.
