The taste is mild and slightly salty, with a pleasant fat content. The texture of the meat is tender and soft. The color of the herring is usually silvery-gray with dark stripes on the back. The flesh of herring is white to pink. It is very nutrient-rich and contains proteins, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins (especially vitamin D and B12) and minerals.

Herring is found in both salt and fresh water. It is one of the most common fish species in the world.

Herrings have a slender, elongated body and are usually silvery in color. They have a small adipose fin behind the dorsal fin and a caudal fin that is slightly forked. Due to its high nutrient content, herring is an important part of a healthy diet. Omega-3 fatty acids found in herring may help reduce inflammation in the body and lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. Vitamin D, also found in herring, plays an important role in bone health and can help strengthen the immune system.

Herring comes in different varieties: Atlantic herring, Pacific herring and Scandinavian herring. In the past, herring was pickled in salt to transport it. In the 19th century, herrings were increasingly canned and exported, which led to a sharp increase in demand for herrings.

By the way, a herring that is minted, salted and matured is called Matjes. Find out more about Matjes here. At HONEST CATCH you can get herring fillets natural , marinated with herbs or sherry or smoked. You can also get them all in one box with our Matjes tasting package.

Fun fact:

Herring deserves an entry in the Guinness Book of Records, as no other fish in the world can be found in such overwhelming numbers. They form immense swarms that number hundreds of tons and are often referred to as "silver of the sea" because of their silvery appearance. These huge groups of fish serve as a collective defense against predators, as their silver coloring and quick flight response help them stay safe from predators. At the same time, the herring's swarming behavior also supports collective hunting.
